Disney College Program through The Walt Disney Company

Costuming Operations at the Walt Disney World Resort

In this internship, I have a wide range of responsibilities from checking costumes for show-ready quality, building costumes for show-ready quality, cleaning and sanitizing all costume pieces, to assisting cast members through GUS (Garment Utilization System). I also track inventory using the and GUS Self-Checkout portals (the system that tracks costume inventory), sorting and distributing incoming and outgoing laundry, scanning costumes to various locations on property, and transporting costumes to their proper locations.

Reflection: As a Costuming Operations intern at the Walt Disney World Resort, I find myself working both independently and as a team member frequently, a balance that I was seeking when applying for this internship. One of the most valuable experiences I have had so far was when I was in charge of sorting all of incoming Future World costumes at Epcot, as I was the only one working that side of our costuming facility. It taught me how to move quickly and efficiently, so that the rest of the incoming laundry did not get backed up and cause delays on the World Showcase side of our facility. Another valuable experience that is on going is that my first “skill” or assignment I was given for costuming was operations, (or ops), and not entertainment. This means that I can work at six different locations, and it changes every week. This allows me to get the maximum experience out of my internship, by seeing how each of those six facilities does their versions of operations costuming.
