September 26th Event Summary

On Friday (September 26th) afternoon, Sm[ART] Commons Blog held their first event in collaboration with Book Club. This was an absolutely amazing program with beautiful weather and a great turn-out!

Book Club held an activity called blind date with a book. Members of the Book Club went through the stash of books read during previous years and chose the best among them to wrap up with brief descriptions like genre and main subject matter. Participants were able to take home a free new book and a tote bag to carry it in. This event was an absolute success, with all of the books that were wrapped being given away by the end of the event, and consensus from the community that there should be another event like this in the future, with even more books. There was new buzz around the book club and interest in the first book they are reading this semester, Mexican Gothic.

Sm[ART] Commons’ event was a bookmark decorating activity where we had designs that participants could stop and color. This was also a success as people would stop for usually around thirty minutes to an hour to color and chat. We had to keep the event open a bit longer than we expected as well because so many people wanted to finish their designs. This activity was a great community builder, as we had snacks and drinks as well. We were able to show off the blog to people who may not have known about it before. It was a wonderful way to connect more with the MCLA community. Enaya Ogletree from Sm[ART] Commons also created some spotlights for influential Hispanic authors as we close out Hispanic Heritage Month. These were great points of conversation and learning for people who were decorating the bookmarks.
